Ski Wall Racks: The Complete Indoor Ski Storage Guide
Ski Wall Racks: The Complete Indoor Ski Storage Guide
Updated: June 2026
Skiing isn't just a sport, it's a lifestyle. Your skis aren't just equipment; they're a direct line to your best days on the mountain. Whether you're a weekend warrior or a season-pass devotee, the way you store your skis matters more than most people realize. Enter ski wall racks, the smartest solution for protecting your cherished Winter sticks, saving space, and giving your gear the display it deserves.
We've been obsessing over ski storage since 2010 and in this guide we'll walk you through everything you need to know: why proper ski storage matters, the different types of wall racks available, and why Grassracks' bamboo ski wall racks are the best on (and for) the planet.
Why Proper Ski Storage Actually Matters
Skis are precision instruments. Their rocker/camber profile, edges, and bases all work together to deliver a unique experience on snow and improper storage can quietly degrade all three.
When skis are left leaning against a wall, propped in a corner, or tossed in a pile, you risk warping the camber profile (which changes how your skis perform), dulling or dinging edges, scratching bases, and creating trip hazards for kids, pets, and bleary-eyed mornings before a powder day.
A quality ski wall rack solves all of this. It gives your skis a dedicated, safe home where they're properly supported so they're ready to perform every time you pull them down. And as a bonus: nothing gets you stoked for the season like glancing over at your skis on full display.
Two Things to Consider When Storing Skis
1. Edge protection: Your edges are sacred. A good ski wall rack holds skis in a way that prevents edge contact with hard surfaces and eliminates the chance of dings from other objects.
2. Shape preservation: Storing skis in ways that stress or alter their rocker/camber profile can ruin how they feel underfoot. We've been refining our cradle angles since 2010 to ensure our racks are gentle on your geometry.
Types of Ski Wall Racks: Finding Your Fit
Horizontal Ski Wall Racks
Horizontal ski wall racks take advantage of a wall's width, mounting skis parallel to the floor. This is ideal for mudrooms, garages, and ski rooms where you want easy access and a clean display. Space below the rack can be used for benches, boots, or shoe racks. Our Hallsteiner Series is the gold standard here.
Vertical Ski Wall Racks
Vertical ski racks mount skis upright against the wall, using height rather than width. They're incredibly space-efficient and create a dramatic, gallery-like display. Perfect for tighter spaces. Our Vercules series does this beautifully, with pole slots included on each side.
Flush Ski Wall Mounts
The most minimal option. Our flush mounts pin your skis tight against the wall with barely any protrusion into the room. Our Nubbins series is the best example: incredibly versatile, stupidly affordable, and a customer favorite. They also work for poles, bags, jackets, and anything else that hangs.
Freestanding vs. Wall-Mounted
Wall-mounted racks save floor space and become a permanent, beautiful feature of your space. Freestanding racks require no wall drilling and can be moved easily which make them great for rental homes, lodges, or anyone not ready to commit to a permanent install.
Grassracks Ski Wall Rack Lineup
The Hallsteiner Series — Horizontal Ski Wall Rack
Our flagship horizontal ski rack, meticulously refined over a decade. Available in sizes for 1–5 pairs of skis. Our adjustable cradle system and dual Mounting Bar design lets you position each cradle to avoid binding interference perfectly. Skis sit together or separated. Your call.
The Nubbins — Flush Ski Wall Mount
Our smallest, most affordable, most versatile ski wall mount. Nubbins hold skis flush against the wall and are equally happy holding bags, poles, jackets, and more. If you're buying your first Grassracks product, Nubbins are the perfect entry point and they make an excellent gift for any skier (or homeowner looking to make use of some empty wall space).
The Vercules — Vertical Ski Rack
Our vertical ski storage solution, with integrated ski pole slots on each side. The triangular bracket design gives it extraordinary strength. If you want to turn a narrow wall into a full ski gear station, the Vercules is your rack.
The Moloka'i Series — For Wide Skis & Mixed Families
Our Moloka'i was designed for snowboards and skateboards, but its wider arm spacing makes it the perfect choice for fat powder skis, rockered skis with wide tails, or households with both skiers and snowboarders. If you're not sure your skis will fit the Hallsteiner, the Moloka'i has you covered.
Why Bamboo? Stronger Than Steel, Better for the Planet
We build everything from sustainably harvested bamboo. Bamboo grows to harvestable size in 3–5 years (versus 30+ years for hardwood), sequesters more CO₂ than most trees, and is stronger per pound than most metals. It's gorgeous, the natural grain and warm tones turn any ski rack into a piece of art on your wall.
Frequently Asked Questions About Ski Wall Racks
Q: How high should I mount a ski wall rack?
A: This is really personal preference but we do have some tips.. Tip 1: Mount where you can comfortably reach your skis. We typically find this by putting our hand out at around a 45 degree angle and touching the wall above our head.
Tip 2: Don't get too close to the ceiling. Most of our racks require you to lift your skis up and out so make sure you leave room above the rack for that movement.
Tip 3: Make sure you leave space under the rack to hang extra ski gear on the rack's utility hooks.
Q: Can ski wall racks damage my skis?
A: Our racks are specifically designed to avoid this. We use padding on most cradles and precise angles that have been refined for over a decade. The main risks with cheap racks are edge contact with metal components and base damage from pressure points — our design avoids both.
Q: How many skis can one rack hold?
A: Our Hallsteiner Series comes in sizes for 1 - 5 pairs. Our Nubbins can hold 1 pair each (buy multiples). Our Vercules holds 3 pairs vertically with poles on each side.
Q: Do ski wall racks work for snowboards too?
A: Yes and no, you need to make sure you buy the right Series. Our Nubbins and Moloka'i Series are designed for both. For dedicated snowboard storage, see our full snowboard rack lineup.
Q: What's the best ski rack for a small apartment?
A: The Nubbins flush mount is your best friend in tight spaces. Skis sit nearly flat against the wall with minimal room protrusion. The Vercules vertical rack is great for utilizing height in small rooms. The Hallsteiner is great for long, short walls.
