Surfboard Rack for Home
When you’ve rinsed off and hung the wettie up to dry, all you want to do is heat some leftovers and kick back on the couch, but don’t ignore the last pivotal step in your trip; proper surfboard storage. Hooking up your home with a surfboard rack that can protect your board and put it on display keeps your favorite hobby always within arms reach.
Display racks and shaping stands have come a long way. You don’t have to rely on empty corners or only surf ding-proof wooden surfboards anymore. Using suitable display racks will extend the life of your surfboard, prevent any unwanted trips to your local surf shop, and might just tie the whole room together.
Of course, not every surf rack serves as a bonafide surfboard display. There are loads of different ways to lean your surf gear against a wall, but there are only a few surfboard display racks that will stand the test of time. We’re here to walk you through the process step by step and shine a light on key factors to consider when outfitting your home with a free-standing or wall mounted surfboard display.
Once you’ve found the right system, you’ll be free to expand your quiver and always have the perfect board ready for whatever the day’s conditions.
Why You Should be Using a Surfboard Rack
Wall mounted surfboard storage racks may seem like one step too high to climb, but the right rack holds strong, looks good, and provides plenty of room for growth. Surfing is a lifelong sport. We all love the idea of getting a fresh board every few months, but that doesn’t mean I’m ready to deal with damaged surfboards every few months.
Surfers use all sorts of words to describe their favorite surfboard, but durable is not one of them. These highly specialized pieces of equipment don’t fare well on dry land. A vertical surfboard is one gust away from a fresh ding, and it’s only a matter of time before lackadaisical storage results in a trip to the board doctor.
I don’t care if you’ve got the fanciest lib tech webbing or a sun-drenched yellow poly; your surfboards can only take so much. Using a premium wooden surfboard display rack is the least you can do to protect your investment and head into the water without getting an unwelcome surprise in the parking lot.
It’s not just logistics, either. Until Mr. Merrick figures out compacting surfboards, each of your boards will take up about six feet of living space. As the boards start piling up, any room can feel messy if they’re not sorted and stored with care. There is no point in owning six different boards if you can’t access three of them! The right surf rack keeps things crisp and clear.
Critical Elements of Your Home Surfboard Storage Rack
Not every surfboard rack holds the same. There is no benefit to hooking your prized surfboard, skateboard, wakeboards, or sups to plastic pieces and concrete flooring. If your surfboard stand doesn’t correctly support your gear, you’re better off leaving it in the car.
Let’s Take a look at the nitty-gritty and find key elements that elevate your surf gear storage into a proper surfboard display.
Materials
Your surfboard storage rack will only take you as far as what’s holding it all together. Whether you’re shopping for a wall rack or want to keep your boards freestanding with a floor display rack, look for authentic, natural materials to guarantee your rack holds.
Too many modern racks cut corners with cheap metal alloys or plastic pieces in crucial areas. These may hold for a year or two, but nothing outlasts natural Bamboo and real wooden surfboard displays.
Material importance isn’t just relevant to load-bearing corners. Fill out your shaping stands with foam padding underneath the board, padded arms to hold strong yet gentle, and round out the rest of your surfboard rack with the real tough stuff.
Design
The most common pitfall of a DIY surfboard rack is a faulty design. You can equip your indoor-outdoor storage arsenal with the best wooden surfboard storage materials, but your wall display can spill over and take up serious space without a few key design elements.
There are all sorts of display racks out there with a few extra arms and legs that jut out and complicate installation for no good reason. The best surfboard stand does more with less and safely stores shortboards and longboards while in a space efficient way.
Impact
As surfers, we get a unique seat at the edge of mother nature’s beauty. We also have a responsibility to protect the natural areas that give us the energy to explore our passions.
If rising sea levels and human construction impact our surf spots' bathymetry isn’t enough to get us paying attention, there won’t be pristine waves for us to ride much longer. None of us would litter the beaches and lots in front of our favorite waves, but our care should start and end at home with sustainable surfboard storage.
Finding eco-friendly ways to protect your board has never been easier. The best surfboard racks will even have the extra space to store your recycled neoprene and reef-safe wax in style.
Taking sustainability just as seriously as surfboard storage is what makes Grassracks the best surfboard display rack on, and for, the planet.

Surfboard Storage Racks - One Step Closer to Surf Nirvana
Every swell dwindles eventually, but that doesn’t mean the stoke has to fade with the sea. It’s only a matter of time before the ocean lights up again and we remember why we wake up in the morning. The right surfboard storage rack is the best way to stay prepared for swells coming next weekend or a few months down the line.
It doesn’t matter if you’re heading across town or across the world to score. Your trip starts and ends with board storage. You can get away with haphazardly tossing your quiver into the corner now and then, but proper surfboard storage will eventually be the difference in stretching out the lifespan of your favorite board.
The good news is that storing your board correctly has never been easier. Wall mount storage or freestanding surfboard stands can pick your board up off the floor, keep them out of harm's way, and double as a surfboard display that will remind you to check the forecasts.
It’s Time To Protect your Board
Why wait until you’ve got a few dings to invest in a great surfboard storage rack?
No, a surfboard storage rack is not the second thing you should buy after your first 7’6’’ mini-mal, but eventually, the right surfboard stand will be just as important as any other piece of surf gear.
Staying ahead of your home and garage space and keeping your boards in tip-top shape won’t take long with the right set-up, and it will pay dividends again and again. You’ll easily install every one of Grassracks surfboard storage rack options with minimal tools, and they’ll all support your boards for decades.
If keeping your board in tip-top shape isn’t enough, here are a few more reasons why we’re here to help you pick your boards up off the floor and put them on display.
Your board is a Work of Art
Surfboards are beautiful. Even our most haggard, sun-stained beaters have a certain charm that helped us pick them out of the crowd in the first place. You’re doing your house guests a disservice by hiding your boards away in some dark corner.
Whether as simple as a set of surfboard hooks or full-on display racks, hang your surf decor to make the most out of empty walls and create a welcoming space that broadcasts your interests.
A Surfboard Storage Rack Helps Keep Your board At The Ready
So you’ve checked the cams, and you’re in for a beautiful surprise: it’s pumping! Every second you waste getting your gear and flying out the door increases the chances of the afternoon winds mucking up your surf.
Two things can happen next. You can chow down a power smoothie, grab your board and wettie off the wall, and hit the surf, or you can spend the morning digging through the closet for your wetsuit and spend a precious hour waiting for the sun-cure to fix up that ding you noticed on your way out the door.
Properly protecting your board means keeping it out of harm's way in an efficient display rack.
Does Lackadaisical Storage Seem Like No Big Deal?
There are many more benefits of a surfboard wall rack, but it’s just as important to focus on the downsides of leaving your boards on the floor.
One Tilt Is All It Takes
Improper vertical surfboard storage can only end one way: crashing down to earth. Surfboards are super durable in the water, but they don’t fare as well on dry lands, like falling walruses.
More of my boards have been dinged in storage and transit than by reefs and underwater rocks.
Simply falling from being leaned up against the wall onto a concrete floor is more than enough to put a crack in an Al Merrick. Your board can only take so much. Keep your board fresh at home and allocate the beating to the waves.
Save your board for when it matters most by bringing it home to surfboard display racks after every surf.
Good Luck Building Up Your Quiver
Nobody may bat an eye over one board on the floor, but you won’t find many roommates down to dodge an entire room full of soft tops.
Of course, we need a board for every forecast, and anyone who can’t appreciate that should be sent packing long before your collection. Still, a proper board storage system needs to be in place before your quiver gets out of hand.
The right wall mount storage option can hold on to 4+ surfboards and drastically reduce the amount of space your arsenal requires. When looking at a room full of boards it can be hard to justify that new model, but your home and garage look a lot more spacious when the board rack is its own surfboard wall.
Not all Surfboard Storage is made Equal
Hopefully, you get the picture. Protecting your boards is part of the sport. Before you start running off to the beach searching for driftwood, let’s look at what makes an excellent surfboard wall storage rack.
We started Grassracks for the long haul and because we know that a poorly built surfboard storage rack is just as bad as no storage rack at all.
Once you’re ready to take the plunge and find a permanent surfboard storage solution, the next step is choosing wisely. There may be loads of different ways to store your board for a long weekend, but only a few surfboard storage racks can stand the test of time and grow alongside your kit.
Look for these critical aspects of rack design to qualify any potential surfboard stand, and turn your surfboard storage into a surfboard display:
Building with Quality:
Anything hanging on the wall requires extra vigilance, but even a vertical freestanding rack involves attention to the details. Loads of surfboard racks cut corners to lower costs and may seem like the more affordable option, until you’ve got to pay to patch up a hole in the drywall.
At Grassracks, We make every one of our surfboard storage racks in the USA under the strictest regulation and testing environments. Our Grassracks are a grassroots movement, which means every rack we ship gets hands-on care before it turns into your shelves.
You wouldn’t trust a cheap board to keep you afloat at Mavericks, so don’t trust cheap build quality to serve as your gun rack.
Using Durable, Eco-Friendly Materials
We’re surfers, not psychos. Rising sea levels will eventually affect every break on the planet, if unmitigated oceanfront development doesn’t get them first. While we can’t always talk sense to our senators, we can do our part and make sure that nothing we use to surf more has to harm the planet to get us in the water.
We constructed every one of our surfboard storage racks out of nature's most robust and sustainable resources. We finish off our commitment with recycled packaging and biodegradable bags to create the best surfboard racks on, and for, the planet.
No plastics in our oceans means no plastic in our homes! Whether you want a baltic wooden surfboard wall rack or our signature bamboo surfboard stand, you’ll be getting nothing but the earth’s best delivered straight to your front door.
To find a surfboard wall storage rack that can protect your board and help it shine, we looked towards natural products to get the job done right.
Which Surfboard Storage Rack is Best for Me?
There is no perfect surfboard wood display wall rack for every household. You’ll need to map out your space and decide if you want a vertical freestanding rack, a horizontal surfboard wall rack, or a surfboard wall rack that can keep growing as long as you’ve got wall space.
Your surfboard wall rack should extend the lifespan of your entire quiver and still be holding strong when it’s time to teach your kids how to surf, so it's worth a few extra bucks committing to the right rack.
Luckily, Grassracks has loads of different options that cover all sorts of storage areas and represent all sorts of budgets. We’ve even got wooden surfboard racks that hold just as strong as bamboo.
Surfboard Stands
These lush displays are best used for your favorite board or for households with only one or two boards to store. The thick racks arms can serve as a stand-up paddleboard rack or give your favorite shortboard a front-row display.
Vertical Freestanding Racks
Vertical Surfboard racks are a great option if you’ve got a bit of floor space to kill, as the versatile rack-mount allows you to store all your favorite toys. You can fit instruments, skateboards, wakeboards, and snowboards alongside your quiver and protect it with hand-carved excellence.
Horizontal Surfboard Racks
There is no system more space-efficient and stylish than our Kaua’i series. This horizontal surfboard wall rack is an iconic choice for anyone who wants to stow four boards in the same space. Extra hooks provide a perfect spot for wetsuits, and the sturdy arms can support longboards or shortboards.
Garage Surfboard Racks May Be Your Ultimate Surf Weapon
When the sun’s out or the surf’s pumping, grab your gear and get out there! As the quiver adds up and the space slims down, picking the right garage surfboard rack is the only way to give everyone enough room to breathe and stay ready for the next big swell.
The only trouble is, after a full day spent surfing the year’s first great north swell, I’d hardly expect you to get your board shorts hung up, let alone get your board stowed away correctly. To meet your surf-tired body halfway, finish your quiver with a garage surfboard rack that makes it easier to do the right thing.
It’s only a matter of time before leaning your board against the wall or leaving it in the car leads to an unwanted ding. An excellent surfboard storage rack will keep your board out of harm’s way by hiding it in plain sight.
Without storing it in a coffin all summer, you can help your surfboard last longer by installing a mounting system to stow your board. Our garage surfboard racks work across the home and can hang your boards vertically and horizontally on the walls and floors.
Keeping your board locked in and upright through the off-season, or just a flat week, is the first critical step towards pushing your surfing further.
Why Use Surfboard Wall Storage?
A poorly stored board will ruin the wax job and damage your equipment permanently, especially once you start amassing a collection. Instead of just surfing whichever board you can reach without knocking down the pile, use the right garage surfboard racks, and you’ll have all your gear within arm's reach.
No, you can’t just lean your surfboard against the wall and call it board storage. A garage surfboard rack keeps your boards locked into place and out of the way.
You can choose between a wall-mounted surfboard stand, vertical wall racks, and freestanding surfboard rack to take advantage of your particular home and garage set-up and stow your boards in style (while turning your board from an eye-sore to gorgeous surfboard décor).
The Only Truly Ding-free Surfboard Storage Solution
The most obvious answer should also be the only one you need. Your surfboard lean-to will crumble one day, and if there is anything but plush carpet underneath, there's a high chance the fall will leave a mark on your board. It’s not a matter of if, but when inferior surfboard storage results in you messing around with a ding repair kit while everyone else is scoring.
Why trust messy corners or the bit of space above your workbench to support your most valuable piece of equipment?
It Supplies an Extra Splash of Inspiration
Nothing deflates the stoke like putting your gear into deep storage. If your Surfboard’s home base is deep in the closet's depths under the stairs, you're all that more likely to stay home next time you’re considering paddling out.
In our household, we keep our surfboards staring right at the front door. Each glance at the used whip you scored on Craigslist last weekend will have you checking the forecast and getting out the wettie.
In Memoriam
It’s only a matter of time before we say goodbye to our daily groveler. When it’s your surfboard's turn to go face to face with Davy Jones', you can give it an un-ceremonial burial in the parking lot or take home a piece of surfing history.
When transformed into surfboard décor, Nothing is too far gone. While it may not be worth fixing, your board and our epic surf racks can give your broken surfboard a forever home and tie the room together.
What Makes Our Garage Surfboard Racks the Best Racks on the Planet?
If you don’t figure out a long term surfboard storage system, you might have to start selling some boards or parking outside. It’s time to take the garage seriously and find the right surfboard storage rack to maximize your wall storage.
You may have noticed that there are loads of wall storage options out there, but that doesn’t mean there are no wrong answers. As the market gets flooded with more and more cheap stands, we bucked the trend while keeping things traditional with our bamboo board racks and wooden surfboard stands.
This blend resulted in a sustainable and durable storage rack that’s as efficient as it is stylish.
Grassracks are Uncomplicated
You don’t need a PhD in board storage to store your SUP and surfboards. You can hook up each garage surfboard rack in our arsenal with very little effort and only a few minutes of your time.
Everyone can put an “easy-to-install” sticker on the package, but we took it to heart. To back up this pledge, we built our wall mounting system from scratch to make each piece easily interchangeable and adjustable with absolutely no tools.
Each vertical freestanding rack underwent this same effort. Without drilling holes in the wall, you can easily put it together in under one minute, no really - less than one minute, and our vertical freestander holds up to 4 boards and/or guitars.
Our Surfboard Racks Are Real Bamboo and Wooden Wall Displays
When it comes to wall-mounted surfboard storage, it all boils down to the design and materials used. Multi-ply bamboo and birch materials offer the best in strength and durability. With your favorite gear in a constant fight against gravity, picking a well-designed rack with an incredibly strong mounting system that employs the strongest naturally occurring material on the planet is a good choice.
The natural aesthetic of Grassracks fits perfectly into all sorts of interiors and also makes efficient use of any garage storage area.
Our 3-ply bamboo surfboard racks are the strongest shoots of the bunch. What makes bamboo so strong are the thousands of tiny fibers that run the length of each culm, similar to a ski lift steel cable. Each ply’s grain runs perpendicular to the next ply it touches, giving our bamboo absolutely incredible multi-directional strength. All we had to do was add water, and fast-growing bamboo quickly made a garage surfboard rack with a higher tensile strength than steel.
They Are Simply the Best Racks ON & FOR the Planet
Knowing what we know now, it’s ludicrous to consider yourself an industry leader without considering your place in our planet's future. That rumination led us away from cheap plastics and shoddy craftsmanship and made us look towards the Earth to supply the goods.
Birch and bamboo surfboard racks quickly stood out from the crowd because these materials are some of Earth’s most sustainable resources, not to mention some of the strongest. Using bamboo for our garage surfboard racks was a no-brainer because of its hardy durability and its minimal carbon footprint.
We locked in the best quality product, but we couldn’t stop there. Every square inch of our bamboo racks are coated in Vermont Natural Coatings, which gives our surfboard displays a lustrous and eco-friendly finish with zero VOC. The finish is actually made from a byproduct of making cheese.
The best surfboard garage racks ship in recycled packaging and biodegradable bags to finish our mission at every step of the production line.
How to find your perfect Garage Surfboard Rack
With board storage options for all sorts of board sizes, you won’t have to go too far to find your perfect fit.
We’ve got you covered with high-quality wooden surfboard stands, free-standing vertical racks, and a horizontal surfboard rack that will make the most out of limited space; wrap your gear in an extra layer of protection, or leave room to store all sorts of board sport gear on one shelf.
Take a look at these questions that will help you toward the perfect garage surfboard rack for your space requirements.
Where do I have open space?
If every inch of extra space is a luxury, you can find a garage surfboard rack that either hugs the wall, hangs from halfway down the ceiling, or is completely free-standing. Freestanding racks are the easiest to install, and they don’t require putting holes in the wall, but they do take up some floor space.
How many boards need storing?
With options for one board up to a whole wall full, you can let the number of boards you need to store dictate which garage surfboard rack is the right choice. Remember that these display racks last a lifetime with some basic care, so you want to leave a bit of space to expand your quiver.
How often will I be taking them in and out?
The best rack for the offseason is rarely the best choice for daily use, but our racks are the exception to the rule. They’re great for grab-and-go storage, or displaying your boards for months on end as if they were in a museum. We like to store our gear on both wall racks and freestanding racks.
Our Best Garage Surfboard Racks
The Kaua`i Series
These space-saving garage surfboard racks serve as our signature surfboard series by providing horizontal storage anywhere you’ve got a bit of free wall space. The Kaua`i stores boards, leashes, wetsuits, and gear bags for all sorts of occasions,
You can choose your adventure with the interchangeable Kaua`i wall storage racks. Start with one board rack and slowly add on as your arsenal fills up, or take advantage of the extra rows to store from 1-4 boards as your quiver expands.
At maximum strength, the Kaua`i can fit four boards and has the convenient utility hooks to keep your leashes and wetsuits right where you need them. The sturdy wall rack-mounted system can easily hang a longboard, a Hawaiian gun, or a shortboard, all with equally easy access.
Freestanding Multipurpose Board Rack
If your space is starting to fill up with more equipment than you know what to do with, this heavy-duty garage surfboard rack can really keep things organized.
The freestanding display uses either solid birch or bamboo ply pieces. Every connection point between your board and the bamboo stays soft with a comfy base pad and cradle padding that also makes sure nothing slips out of place on your freestanding garage surfboard.
All you’ll need for assembly is one rubber mallet and about ten feet of free floor space.
Fishes, pintails, and even skateboards and snowboards can comfortably lean into the bamboo protection offered by this freestanding rack. Some customers love to tie their boards in place, though often not necessary. For those surfers who want that little added extra security we’ve cut small holes into the legs from which to latch a bungee, tie down strap, or little rope to keep your quiver behaving.
Freestanding SUP Display
While our horizontal wall vertical free-standing surfboard racks are more than capable of storing stand up paddleboards, sometimes a vertical freestanding rack makes the most sense, even for one board. Perfect for a garage surfboard rack that only needs to keep one board ready for action, this freestanding display keeps your board front and center while staying locked into place.
The display accommodates SUP and surfboards with plenty of comforts. Starting with the padded cross member support cradle, thick base pad, and adjustable tie down strap that helps secure your board, this freestanding rack is just as much a piece of surf decor as board storage.
Our Vert Freestanding legs have a slight tilt and lean-back that qualifies the surfboard rack for stable home and garage use. The cherry on top is actually on the bottom of this garage surfboard rack. The base pad is made out of a thick foam material that will keep the tail of your board ding-free and locked in while on the rack.
Wall-Mounted Vertical Rack
Our last garage surfboard rack option is arguably the most versatile. Perfect for tall SUP boards, board shops, or garages that are starting to feel like used board stores, this vertical rack is modular and can expand as far as you’ve got the wall space to accommodate a whole lot of surfboards. Add your own touch with whatever floor mat you choose to cushion your tails.
Available in Bamboo or Birch, each rack stores up to four boards with soft and safe padding on each arm. The long arms reach out and protect boards of most shapes and sizes to make this wall mount storage option perfect for pretty much every SUP and surfboard out there.
The wall mounted vertical rack is the best option for the surfer and paddler who has big boards and wants to maximize storage space in their garage, or board shop.
What’s right for you..
There are many different types of surfboard racks out there and picking the one that’s right for you depends on where you live, your home, and your space. While indoor surfboard racks are the gold standard, garage surfboard racks often end up making a great use of space without taking up space in your home. Peruse our whole line of board, bike, and ski racks to see what works best for you and your gear. With Grassracks, you get the strongest, best-looking, and most eco-friendly racks on the planet. Bring Your Adventure Home!
Vertical and Horizontal Ski Racks - Just in Time for Winter
After a crazy year, somehow Winter 2020 is upon us.. er, wait a minute, Winter 2021 is upon us. How did that happen? Summer has faded into Fall which means a certain group of adventure seekers is starting to get tingles of excitement. The excitement we feel as we see the first coatings of fresh snow start to grace the highest mountain tops.
Quarantine Home Improvement Projects
The pandemic provided many challenges in every aspect of life and, for many, forced us into our homes much more than we’d like to be. While inconvenient, it offered a chance for us to jump into many of those home projects that seemingly never leave our lists. It allowed us to take a look at our home and see where we can improve and especially organize and increase our space efficiency. Many were finally found saying, “alright, the skis thing in the corner is not a permanent solution”.. and a good realization it was because nobody needs to be left playing a game of Pickup Sticks with $5k worth of gear when they have the need to get gnarly.
In-Home Ski Displays make you cooler.
Aside from the obvious organization and space efficiency, there are a few things about in-home ski storage that many skiers don’t think of..
- Organization and Space Efficiency – This one is obvious, racks keep your skis organized in a way that can maximize the space in your home and hence more space with the same amount of home.
- Protection – Keeping your skis safe on the mountain can be difficult. Keeping your skis safe in your home is not difficult at all. A Ski Rack is a great way to protect your skis from falls, scrapes, and dings which will keep your them in great condition, will extend their life, and will help you to enjoy them for longer.
- Enjoyment – Skiing is such a delight.. why let it end when you leave the mountain? What we have noticed about our customers reaction to our products is that they didn’t realize how much of an impact seeing their gear on a daily basis would have on their general happiness. It makes sense.. We love our gear and what it allows us to do, so when we see our gear on a daily basis, it acts like a winter memento and fires up our adventure highlight reel. Sit back and let the memories play!
With stoke to get out on our next adventure higher than ever, it’s time to prep for the upcoming season and get your winter gear home base organized. Luckily we have a few great options for skiers of all types!
The Hallsteiner Series – Wall-Mounted Horizontal Ski Rack
Our Hallsteiners are our staple ski racks. They hold skis horizontally to make use of wall width and accommodate all skis (up to width of 110mm under foot) and similarly sized gear. Our incredibly strong, easy-to-install Grassracks Mounting Bar System allows you to adjust cradle width in seconds to accommodate for obstructions like bindings. This is a feature you won’t find on other ski racks on the market. Generally, when other racks are installed, their placement is final. Our Hallsteiners have been tirelessly tweaked over the years to find the perfect mix of storage and displayability so you have grab-and-go access to your skis but can also see the artwork that you most likely spent hours pining over before purchase. Protective padding for each arm gives your skis a nice safe and soft pillow on which to rest.
The Moloka’i Series – Wall-Mounted Snowboard & Skateboard Rack.. ALSO perfect for fat powder skis.
Our Moloka’is were designed as our snowboard and skateboard rack and that’s really how we promote them, however, the size of and spacing of cradle arms makes our Moloka’I Series perfect for storage of fat powder skis or skis with robust bindings.. there’s just more space with which to work than our Hallsteiner Series. This rack series does come with only one bar so cradles are still adjustable but they don’t have the unlimited width potential that the Hallsteiner Series does (but we do sell additional bars separately, if needed). Padding is also included for each arm.
Nubbins – Flush Wall-Mounted Ski & Snowboard Rack – ALSO good for.. everything.
One of our newest racks, our Nubbins quickly became a customer because, well, they’re a no-brainer. The sweet circular babes grew out of our Zero Waste Initiative. While we are very material efficient with our sheet nesting, small ‘drop’ pieces were unavoidable and we wanted to make use of it. What we ended up creating was a “flush” ski and snowboard wall rack. While other gear that we design for is unique in all directions with fins, trucks, and handlebars, skis and snowboards are unique in that they have 1 side which is relatively flat, making it possible to mount skis flat against the wall. There are 3 main benefits to this.
- Display – Most racks hold gear at an angle, which gives them great visibility but nothing compares to gear being flat against a wall and showing off in all it’s glory. It’s 100% visibility and it’s glorious.
- Space Efficiency – Mounting skis flat against the wall saves space. While our Hallsteiner and Moloka’I Series are space efficient they will protrude around 10” – 15” into the room from the wall. With Nubbins, that protrusion is cut down to around 5” (depending on size of bindings). Now 5” - 10” might not seem like a lot, but it is a lot of extra space to be saved, especially in smaller rooms.
- Minimal – The simplicity of our Nubbins really is great. They come out 1.25” from the wall and are very unobtrusive. They ensure that the focus is on your skis and not on the apparatus that holds them. Nubbins make it easy to personalize a wall and really make it your grab-and-go home base for your winter gear.
There’s no one-size-fits-all option for ski storage but we have the bases covered for every athlete whether you just want indoor ski storage to keep them safe and out of harms way or if you want a beautiful eco-friendly ski display to appreciate your gear all year long. We have Hallsteiners and Moloka’is for Horizontal storage and Nubbins for Vertical Display, it really depends on your home and what you want. The Simplest Indoor Ski Rack on the Planet - Grassracks' Nubbins
It’s late September and the snow has already begun to dust mountain tops across the country. For us skiers and other winter adventurers, the excitement is beginning to mount and it couldn’t come soon enough. Speaking of Mounting.. Let’s get right into this little dittle about our new gorgeous, simple, and space efficient ski racks, our Nubbins. (This is a ski rack article, but keep in mind that our Nubbins are also designed for snowboards.. Since a snowboard is essentially a ginormous ski, they are measured, mounted, and displayed the same way with our Nubbins.)
No Waste Is Good Waste
Our Nubbins were born out of our Grassracks Zero Waste Initiative. The environment has always been priority 1 for us so in addition to using sustainable materials and practices, part of that is being as efficient as possible with our material and the energy put into making products. While our sheet nesting is incredibly efficient, we were inevitably left with small pieces of otherwise unusable bamboo that we refused to have as waste, so we designed our smallest and most minimalist rack to date.
Before we get too far.. we mentioned that our Nubbins are made from small “drop” pieces of gorgeous bamboo. The process is pretty interesting and here is an entertaining 51 second video about that.
Weird Shapes
Since most of the gear we deal with is oddly shaped and has awkward features like fins, trucks & wheels, or handlebars, skis and snowboards are unique in that they have one relatively 2-dimensional side. So, while other gear needs to be held by arms and given space on all sides, skis and snowboards are able to be mounted flat against the wall, this has 3 advantages..
3 Advantages
- Incredibly space efficient. On a typical ski rack, skis lay at an angle on a rack so they would protrude into the room at the depth of the rack plus the width of the gear. With Nubbins, the space needed is ski thickness plus bindings. For reference, skis on a normal rack protrude about 10” with bindings. With Nubbins this depth is cut down to roughly 4.5”, depending on your bindings. (For snowboards the difference is more drastic going from roughly 16” on a typical rack to a mere 5” with Nubbins.)
- 100% visibility. Most racks are pure function and it sucks and we hate it. We always design with gear visibility in mind so you can see your favorite gear thus releasing your serotonin and feel wintery happiness. While our Hallsteiner Series Ski Racks do a great job at being space efficient and showing off your gear, our Nubbins are king of the mountain at displaying your shred babies. They really excel at making the most of your board art, as can be seen above.
- Simple and minimal. Like all of our products, our Nubbins are outrageously easy to install. What is slightly different is just how small and unobtrusive they are. Their focus is to get the job done and stay out of the way so your skis can show off proudly on your wall. That’s all there is to say about that.

Ski Storage
Ski storage may seem easy but can be a problem, especially when we start to add poles, bags, helmets, gloves, etc. It may seem a bit daunting to figure out how to keep it all organized. Leaning your snow sticks against the corner may seem like a great idea until the first time they fall, leaving you to repaint your wall and fix a nasty ding on your ski’s sidewall or edge. For the safety of your gear, the organization of your room, and your own personal satisfaction it makes sense to look into a rack that is right for your home.
Versatile Ski Storage
Nubbins are different from our wall racks in how they store skis and that they don’t have the Utility Hooks found on most of our wall racks for skis, snowboards, surfboards, bikes, etc. Since the goal is to organize all of your gear, that may seem like an oversight, but our Nubbins are perfect for holding things like bags, jackets, helmets, and poles. For me, I like everything to have it’s own place (and Nub), but often times things like poles and bags can hang easily off Nubbins that are used to mount your skis.
Strong, Gorgeous, Eco-Friendly, Upcycle Bamboo
Our choice to use bamboo was easy. Its beautiful color and grain makes it an easy, eco-friendly addition to any home. Our sanding process then brings out every fiber that makes the material so strong, both on the face and cut edge. We apply a butcher block conditioner to each Nubbin to protect it from moisture and give it a deep, rich color.
With Winter fast approaching and the pandemic forcing us into our homes more than we’d like to be, now is a great time to create your ultimate ski gear home base. An organized and orderly storage and display system will not only maximize your space and protect your gear, but will keep your stoke high in between every adventure! The Best Snowboard Rack Review - via ReddyYeti - Grassracks Moloka'i Series
To begin, we should explain what ReddyYeti is and how we came to know them. A few years ago we were approached by a few cool dudes about joining their community. They explained how they were creating a community of cool, small, outdoor startups with the goal of increasing exposure for the brands and also getting great products in the hands of deserving customers. As a small brand, that sounded like exactly what we wanted, so we were interested. After a few years, they seem to be crushing exactly what they set out to do..
This is an unsolicited plug. Consumers, if you like finding out about cool brands and then saving money on their products, sign up for ReddyYeti right this very instant. At the time of writing this blog, the monthly fee is about $3, which means that if you purchase 1 item with a discount code from the membership, you will likely already have saved money.
As our relationship with RY developed, we did a few giveaways with them and then sent them one of our Moloka’i Duo snowboard racks for a review and product feature. Luckily they liked it and, quite honestly, we think Matt is pretty hilarious.
Let’s break down and explain a few of those wonderful claims about our Moloka’i Duo or “two-racker” as Matt likes to call it..
- Part of our Moloka’i Series, this rack was designed to organize and display snowboards and skateboards. While it can easily accommodate skis, the arm length would be a big overkill for skis, UNLESS you have some Fatty McFat powder skis or chunky bindings that you think may interfere on our Hallsteiner Series Ski Rack.
- It makes use of our proprietary Mounting Bar System (1 bar), which is super easy to install, is just about strong enough to do pull-ups on, and allows you to adjust cradle width to accommodate bindings/etc. As for holding a baby hippo, it really depends on the weight of the baby hippo, that claim might actually be true. I’ve done pull ups on them when I weighed a strong 160 lbs.
- It’s made of super strong bamboo and is now offered in a more economical birch material as well. Bamboo racks are finished with an eco-friendly clear coat to protect from sun and moisture. Birch is very light in color and left unfinished so customers can paint, stain, or finish to match their home decor. While I’m partial to bamboo because I love the color/grain/etc, Birch is also a great option and looks fantastic when stained/painted. The grain is subtle but looks amazing through stains.
- What Matt wasn’t able to show was our installation process, which basically consists of a little measuring, a little stud-finding, and a little screwing. Easy peasy lemon squeezy.
- Not shown in the video but definitely a thing that happens.. We provide protective padding for the arms to protect your gear from the bamboo and vice versa and also small strips for where the cradles meet the wall. Probably not necessary but we rather enjoy going above and beyond, in case you didn’t get that from the video.
- Eco-Friendly. Finally, our favorite part. Not only are our racks the best on the market, they are also the most eco-friendly on the market. We use uber sustainable bamboo (and birch), finish with perhaps the most eco-friendly finish on the market (Vermont Natural Coatings), use efficient nesting to minimize waste (and create products out of any leftover material we have), and use all recyclable shipping materials. It’s real nice.
- Functionality. All the other stuff is nice but if it’s not functional, it’s not worth a piece of pound cake. We’ve designed and tweaked for years to find the perfect mix of organization and displayability to maximize space efficiency while letting you show off your gear in a way that is beautiful for your home. The materials we use are strong and absolutely gorgeous, we don’t cut corners on these aspects.. Or really anything we do come to think of it.
- Worried about shipping? Don’t be. Shipping is free in the lower 48 (US) and we do ship worldwide as economically as we can!
Grassracks' goal is to make the best racks on & for the planet. We are happy to be able to say that we do just that. Organizing your gear will make your life a little less hectic and lower the risk of a gear avalanche that can result in damage to your gear and yourself. Not only will having an organized gear solution make you a happy home-owner but seeing your favorite outdoor equipment displayed nicely on a beautifully crafted rack will send your stoke through the roof as you are reminded daily of some of your favorite trips.
Peruse our product line, check out your home, and see where Grassracks might fit. Not quite sure about how it would all work? Reach out to us! We are quite literally the experts and are always happy to figure out what is best for you.

5 Things to Consider When Buying a Bike Rack for Your Home
Generally the transition into Spring comes with more pomp and circumstance but we find ourselves in the midst of a pandemic, stuck at home, feeling our minds melt as we WFH into oblivion thanks to the Coronapocalypse. Some of us (yes, us) were left scrambling after a last minute cancellation of an epic end-of-season ski trip. To keep things in perspective.. We are healthy and safe and that’s what is important.
Some think that since the season is over you can’t keep drawing satisfaction from your snow gear. That is a fallacy. We attach memories to possessions. In fact, part of the reason that humans love possessions so much, aside from what they allow us to do, is that we are wired to attach memories to objects which in turn help us recall memories, generally strong ones. When we constantly encourage people to buy our racks it’s not only because our racks keep gear organized and safe, but to relive your best memories every day when you look at your gear displayed on our racks. Sounds like a sales pitch but it’s the truth.
More good news. We are not left without a means of attaining the adrenaline pumping, wind in your helmet and deep quad burn that we get from snow cruising. Sometimes it’s downhill, sometimes it’s on paved surfaces. It’s called biking and that very season is upon us.
So let us switch gears.. from boots and bindings to wheels and chain and commit to a season of trees and pollen and green, after all, this is a blog about bike racks..
Aside from being one of the most fun things you can do with your pants on, biking is an environmentally responsible and totally viable means of transportation (ask the Dutch). Both Road Biking and Mountain Biking are incredible workouts that engage some of the body’s largest muscle groups and play a major part in maintaining a healthy metabolism. We could write another entire blog about the health benefits of cycling (in fact we may). Suffice it to say: biking = very good for you.
Once you’ve taken up biking and lowered carbon emissions, raised your metabolism, and strengthened your bod, it’s time to put your bike somewhere safe but out of the way. Easier said than done.
While bikes are fairly light and thin, they’re awkward (thanks a lot, handlebars!). Luckily there are lots of options, depending on your living space.
A World Full of Bike Racks
In a world full of indoor bike racks and bike racks for your garage, it’s important to find the one that meets your needs. While our bikes are often the most rugged of our equipment, they still require a little TLC when not in use to ensure you’re getting the longest life from your bike. Unfortunately, leaning your bike against the garage wall or stuffing it in the closet doesn’t count as a proper bike storage. You need a bike rack that can handle the weight, fit in your space, and still look great in your home. If you’re in the market for a bike storage solution, you’ll want to consider all factors given the space you have to work with. Understanding the needs for space efficiency, strength, and design in your home will help you find the best bike rack for your bike and gear. So, here are some things to consider..
- Where is the best place for your bike? Will this space allow you to keep your bike (and you) safe?
- What type of space/storage restrictions does this space have?
- What type of rack will work with your bike?
- Will your bike meet accessibility/visibility requirements?
Now, let's get into the 5 things you need to consider when purchasing a bike wall rack...
1. Tidy Up Clutter with a Garage Bike Rack
For many cyclists, the garage is an obvious home for their bike since it’s the universal transition space for outdoor-indoor gear. Bikes are not always big or heavy but their design makes them difficult to store and though garages start out spacious, they too quickly become cluttered. One organization tip is to get things UP. On average, 60% of storage in your garage takes place within 34” of the ground, with another 20% within 6’ of the ground and only 20% above the 6’ mark. Getting your bike off the ground is important for your home and your sanity because a bike rack separates your bike from garage clutter and frees up low space that is needed for heavy or high-use items.
Too often we’re left tripping over items scattered about the floor and along the wall. Let’s take a moment to appreciate this staggering fact -- of all of the homeowners with a two car garage, 1 in 4 has so much stuff in their garage that they can’t park their own cars in them!
Ceiling Hooks & Bike Hangers
Storing a bike doesn’t have to be a challenge because homeowners have a few options. The most common of which is hanging bikes from hooks in the ceiling. This is a great, simple, and cheap means of bike storage. While perfect for some riders, it’s not our favorite. The problem with hooks, aside from the fact that they don’t look great, is that they often interfere with garage doors, are only reasonably practical in garages with rafters or accessible wood frame, and can be dangerous. With ceiling hooks, bikes are hung upside down from the ceiling which very often leaves handlebars are head-height or worse, eye height. In addition to difficulty faced by some riders to invert and lift bikes overhead, many riders have injured themselves by walking into bikes, catching their eyes on handlebars, or knocking bikes off of hooks onto themselves or their belongings. Bike wall racks offer a visual reminder to riders while keeping them from unfortunate collisions whilst racked.
Many one-bike cyclists prefer horizontal wall mounts. And other cyclists that have a number of bikes to store use bike stands or garage bike racks. Regardless of which means of storage you decide to use, remember that doing it properly plays a huge role in ensuring that your bike sees prolonged life. Constantly tripping over your gear won’t keep it in top shape year round. There’s a lot that can clutter our garages, but your bike shouldn’t be one of them. If you find yourself with a cluttered garage, consider getting your bike off the floor and on the wall. Your bike should have a storage solution just like everything else, and having that bike wall rack for your garage is one smart way to combat clutter.
2. Maximize Space and Style with an Indoor Bike Wall Rack
Some cyclists don’t have a clutter problem (or garage) -- they have a space problem. Making the most of your home with the space you have is the name of the game. Not having much space makes it less than ideal when considering the best bike storage in your home. And when you have to bring your bike inside, it’s not just about being practical. Not only does it need to maximize space, it has to look good, too.
The dilemma - with limited wall space, how do we achieve bike storage nirvana while maintaining a certain standard of home decor? Many wall bike racks are highly practical, consisting of stands and hooks that can certainly handle a bike’s weight, but they often damage drywall, floors, and are an eyesore. For our friends who love cycling in the open outdoors but are looking to maximize their living space indoors, hooks and stands just simply aren’t good solutions for bike storage.
The solution - The best bike wall mount that we can offer is one that not only maximizes space and is friendly on walls, but is also one that can enhance the look of any room while showing off your favorite ride. (If you’re not convinced that any bike wall rack could be easily installed and is safe on drywall, check out this page about Grassracks gear rack installation).
3. Look for a Bike Rack with a Shelf
When considering bike storage solutions, it is necessary to think about what to do with everything else you need for cycling. Storing your bicycle is priority 1, but what do you do with your helmet, pack, pump, spares, and tools? This is where a bike wall rack with a shelf comes in handy. One benefit of the Grassracks’ Rackcycle is the built in shelf that allows you to keep everything you need for your bike all in one place. This style of rack is often called a Bike Shelf. Buying a wall rack with a shelf can eliminate searching your trunk for your missing cleats and gear, because now you have a space-efficient bike gear storage solution. For cyclists that are always on the go, it’s so important to have that home for everything you need out there on the road, and having a bike shelf with built in hooks can do just that. If you’re looking for more bike storage ideas, take a look at our friends over here for a great best of list for bike storage solutions.
4. Find a Bike Storage Solution that Fits Your Budget
With all sports, it’s important to consider how much you’re willing to spend on equipment. Owning a bike can get expensive quickly, so keeping an eye on price to keep things in your budget is always a good idea. Bike wall racks and bike wall mounts can range anywhere from under $20 to over $400, depending on a number of factors. Obviously, the more bikes you’re planning to store, the higher the price tag will be. Also, the materials used for the wall rack will impact price too. It’s common to spend about $80 to $140, depending on material and quality.
One word of advice to people on a tight budget -- don’t forsake quality and durability in pursuit of a cheap product. A bike wall rack should be strong and able to handle your bike’s weight with ease. Buying the cheapest product on the market might not be able to meet your needs and will leave you needing a new rack within a few years. Similarly, in the case of storing your bike indoors, cheaper products may cause damage to drywall, flooring and, most importantly, your bike. If you rent an apartment or home, keep in mind how quality wall racks could impact any repairs and touch-ups needed in the future.
5. Consider an Eco-Friendly Wall Rack for Your Bike
Lasty, as responsible consumers, it’s important to ensure that every purchase decision we make is minimizing negative impact on the environment. There are already so many advantages of owning a bike for the environment like no emissions, no need for parking (minimizing the need for paving lots and parking garages), and promoting fitness. Your gear and storage should follow suit. Due to the materials used in the manufacturing process, some wall racks leave a tremendous carbon footprint. Material like plastics, metals, fiberglass, rubber, and certain synthetic coatings are harsher on the environment than natural resources like wood and bamboo. Although not often the first consideration, it is important to consider how eco-friendly anything is that we spend our money on.
It’s safe to say that in a world with hundreds of millions of bikes and an incredible amount of unique homes, there is no one-size-fits-all approach to bike storage. What works perfectly for one person probably won’t work exactly for the next. The key is to understand you and your home’s needs so that you can find exactly what you’re looking for. Whether it’s a bike wall mount, bike wall rack, wall hanger, hook, or stand, it’s important to pick a solution that works for you and your bike.
After many years of riding and keeping up with road and mountain bikes, we’ve made the highest quality bike rack on & for the planet, meeting all criteria that we’ve mentioned in this article. After all, we’d be remiss not to share our own bike rack with you..
The Grassracks Rackcycle
Functionality - The most important criterion.
- Strength - Our Rackcycle is constructed from super strong Bamboo (3 ply) or Birch plywood (9 ply). While we rate our bike rack at 60 lbs., it should be noted that it has successfully held a 215 lb. man so, coupled with our 2-point Mounting Bar system, whether you have a road bike or mountain bike, the Rackcycle will support your bike with ease.
- Ease of Installation - Most bicycle storage on the market relies on flimsy material and weak attachment points to support your bike, while we utilize our proprietary Mounting Bar System. This makes use of an incredibly strong Mounting Bar supported by 2 thick spacers and a triangular cradle design that rests on the wall to offset extra weight.
- Designed to fit all bikes - We are often asked if our Rackcycle fits all styles of bikes from road and mountain, men’s and women’s, etc. and our answer is “Yes!”. As long as you have ample wall space to fit a bike and a top tube that allows the cradle to enter, your bike will more than likely be perfectly fine. What does that mean for women’s bikes or bikes with an angled top tube? Just that the bike will sit with the back wheel slightly higher than the front. If you have some crazy geometry going on with your bike and are unsure, email us a picture of your bike and we’ll be happy to see if it is compatible with our Rackcycle.
- Unobtrusive - Our cradles catch a bike’s top tube 11” from the wall which is perfect for most road bikes to sit straight and accommodates wider mountain bike handlebars by slightly angling the tire in a way that minimizes its distance from the wall. The beauty of our solution for bike storage is that it doesn’t invade your home but rather keeps it close to the wall. Where wheel-in/wheel-out bike racks have your bike coming 3 feet out from the wall, our rack takes up only as much space as your handlebars.
Aesthetic - Something that looks great in your home and protects your bike is the end goal. We designed a sleek, stylish rack with two beautiful material options (bamboo and birch). Our bamboo boasts a gorgeous grain and naturally amber coloration while our birch has a subtle grain and a light color, making it ideal for a DIY stain/paint/finish with a color of your choice that suits your home.
Sustainability - A pillar of our company. We refuse to make products at the expense of the environment so we’ve eliminated plastics, designed our entire line to all but eliminate waste material, and used some of the best carbon sequestering plants as material options. Our hardware bags are compostable, our finish is made from Whey Protein, and all of our scrap material is repurposed. If you rely on the environment for biking, your first thought should be protecting it with your actions and your purchases.
We hope you’ve found this article informative and hope that you have a little more guidance on storing and organizing your gear. While we’d love to add you to our Grassracks family, we realize that not all homes are right for our products. However, we feel strongly that if you need to store your bike on a wall, we are the best option. If you have any questions or comments, please feel free to contact us, we’re happy to help!
We ask that wherever you buy or whoever you buy from, do your homework. Not just with a bike rack but always. Make sure you know who you are supporting with your money and that they are in line with your beliefs about good business and the environment. There are many incredible brands doing incredible things but, unfortunately, many more that seek profits at the expense of people, their hard work, and the environment. The time for that has ended. It’s time for all consumers to be educated and start to make a change starting with their wallets.
